Dreadmoor Fishing & Bait Overview
Dreadmoor's skill-based fishing at a glance: bait selection, lure crafting, fish storage, the Fishing Skill Tree, and the verified species ledger.
Last updated: September 25, 2026
Fishing is the center of DREADMOOR. Official material describes skill-based fishing — not a luck-based minigame — connected to bait crafting, storage, inventory, and ship upgrades. This page is the one-screen overview and the home of our species ledger; the dedicated pages carry the depth.
How fishing works in DREADMOOR
Official positioning calls DREADMOOR's fishing skill-based. The September 2026 demo news explicitly reworked "the fishing mechanic", so how it feels minute-to-minute changed late in development. The confirmed pieces of the system:
- Bait selection — what you put on the hook changes what bites.
- Lure crafting — lures are crafted, not just found; materials come from salvage and fish resources.
- Fish storage — a dedicated fish storage upgrade for your trawler is confirmed, so how much you carry back is a real progression choice.
- Fishing Skill Tree — a confirmed progression track dedicated to fishing.
What is not confirmed: exact catch rates, rarity tiers, minigame mechanics, rod statistics, and fishing spot maps. The demo on October 6, 2026 is the first chance to verify any of it.
The species ledger
Six fish species are confirmed by name in official material — four from demo news and two more visible (tagged "predatory") in official store screenshots. This table is the single place on the site we track them; it updates from the demo build the day it is playable.
| Species | Temperament | First confirmed | Preferred bait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Softgrazer | Unknown | Official demo news (Sep 2026) | Unverified — demo-day target |
| Bristler | Unknown | Official demo news (Sep 2026) | Unverified — demo-day target |
| Shovelnose | Unknown | Official demo news (Sep 2026) | Unverified — demo-day target |
| Gleamer | Unknown | Official demo news (Sep 2026) | Unverified — demo-day target |
| Harpooner | Predatory | Official store screenshot — fishing spot panel | Panel lists responding lures — cataloging in the demo |
| Bloodgill | Predatory | Official store screenshot — fishing spot panel | Panel lists responding lures — cataloging in the demo |
Verified September 25, 2026. Habitats, values, sizes, and bait responses are not published yet — this table gets filled from the demo build on October 6, 2026. Any site listing exact fish values before then is guessing.
⚠️ Playtest fish data is historical
The September 10–14, 2026 Open Playtest used reworked fish populations, and its content does not carry over. Guides written around playtest spawn points or values are obsolete — including any numbers we published from the test. Demo data (Oct 6, 2026) replaces everything.
Bait and lures in one screen
The practical loop described by official material: catch fish and scavenge materials, process them at the workbench, craft bait tailored to what you are targeting, and spend that bait on deeper, more dangerous, more profitable water. Which bait works on which species is unconfirmed — the six species above are the first bait-testing targets once the demo is live.
The full crafting chain, grinder details, and torn-page unlocks live on the bait & lures guide.
How the loop connects
The systems on this page are one machine, and it is worth seeing it whole. A trip starts with bait you ground from last trip's worthless small fish. The bait decides what bites; the catch becomes money at the FISH STORE or materials in the grinder and the workbench. Materials become more bait, harpoons, medicines — and reinvestment in the boat that reaches better water, where better fish live.
Two rules give that loop its tension. The catch is the exception to safe storage: if your ship is destroyed, the fish are gone, even though your equipment is not. And bait runs out — the official gameplay description treats stocking bait, harpoons, and health kits before every expedition as basic procedure, because an empty bait hold is a wasted trip.
The depth behind each part of this loop lives in the dedicated guides, but the loop itself — catch, process, craft, sail farther — is the whole game in one sentence.
The demo-day testing plan
When the demo opens on October 6, 2026, this page's ledger is what gets updated first, in this order: catch one of each named species and log its glossary entry (stars, temperament, weight); test the four peaceful-water species against the starting baits; work through the first torn-page unlocks on the Fishing Skill Tree; and price the grinder's conversion rate — how many spare fish a unit of bait stock costs.
By the end of day one, the "Unverified" column in the table above starts becoming real data, and this overview becomes the only bait-to-species reference built on the current build. That is the plan, anyway — the demo will say.
Where the depth lives
These topics now have dedicated pages with the latest verified detail: the fishing guide covers the fight mechanics, skill tree, and storage progression, and the bait & lures guide covers the crafting loop and unlocks.
💡 Sea Blight — naming note
Official material refers to the world's central corruption as the Sea Blight (occasionally written "Sea-Blight" in demo news). Both spellings refer to the same thing. How it affects specific fishing grounds is unconfirmed.
